For the last 6 years we have been watching the racing paddle board industry very closely, making notes on the design evolution and changes that have been posted year on year by the world’s best brands. We have analyzed results on a global level, noting the changes that work well in certain conditions and those that do not. This research, together with our own extensive knowledge of high-speed yacht racing designs (for high performance downwind race yachts such as Volvo Ocean racing yachts and world leading super yacht design concepts), has allowed us to blend the stand out features across the board into our first down wind 14-foot race board, called The Sled.
This board features fuller bow volume, with a water shedding deck and swept back nose. The fuller bow aids in developing an efficient sine wave, allowing the board to move more efficiently in non-plaining conditions such as cruising or the start of run catching. The deck profile sheds water quickly, allowing it to get up to speed swiftly. The swept back bow brings the design more in line with modern trends and improves the board’s aerodynamic profile in cross wind conditions.
Once plaining, the boards nose lifts out of the water with the help of generous nose rocker. This helps feed the water into an aggressive central single concave. The single concave traps the aerated water and redirects it down the center of the board, creating extra lift, early planning and straight-line speed. There are subtle bevels on both sides of the board just below the rail, to help stabilize it and counteract the negative stability that a fast concave generates.
The board includes a cockpit design, lowering the standing position and improving stability. However, the cockpit is not sunk below the rails, ensuring that the board will shed any water that flows onto the deck.
The Sled overall design makes her a superb downwind board and great All-rounder / course racing board, her Hybrid shape aids its wave catching ability and makes her a fast all-rounder.
